Bitcoin Price Forecast: Can Renewed Institutional Demand Drive BTC Above $85,000?

  • Holding above $83,000, Bitcoin inches up as its recovery from the 50-day EMA near $80,786 continues.
  • Renewed institutional demand is evident in US-listed BTC spot ETFs, which attracted net inflows of over $23 million on Tuesday after Monday's $526 million.
  • Easing selling pressure and strengthening bullish momentum give BTC a more constructive technical outlook.

A recovery in institutional confidence is supporting Bitcoin (BTC), with the price holding above $83,000 at the time of writing on Wednesday and showing signs of a bullish resurgence. Over the past two days, inflows into US spot BTC Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have totalled nearly $550 million, pointing to a revival in buying pressure. Fading bearish momentum also leaves BTC's technical outlook pointing to scope for further gains.

Is Institutional Confidence in Bitcoin Returning?

Institutional interest in Bitcoin spot ETFs is picking up again. According to SoSoValue, Tuesday's inflows stood at $23.16 million, compared with $526.60 million on Monday. Together, these consecutive daily inflows bring this week's total so far to $549.76 million, reversing last week's outflows of $228.58 million.

A domestic Bitcoin ETF accessible to retail investors has also received approval from the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA, with investor protection and transparency remaining priorities. The move illustrates the increasing integration of BTC funds into major financial markets, potentially supporting capital inflows over time.

Retail confidence, too, appears to be strengthening, judging by BTC derivatives data. CoinGlass reports that BTC futures Open Interest (OI) has risen over 2% over the past 24 hours to $54.54 billion. This points to a higher notional value of active contracts, attributable either to a build-up in positions or an increase in the spot price. Over the same period, liquidations totalled $66.51 million, with short positions accounting for $57.34 million. This suggests buyers have the upper hand and lends support to the possibility of a build-up in positions.

At 0.0087%, the OI-weighted funding rate is still positive. Traders therefore appear willing to pay a premium to hold long positions, indicating a bias towards further gains.

Technical outlook: Can Bitcoin recover $85,000?

A constructive bullish bias remains intact as Bitcoin holds above its 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of $80,787, trading near $83,382 on Wednesday. Longer-term support for the bullish trend comes from the 200-day EMA around $76,112.

Further reinforcing the prevailing uptrend, the leading cryptocurrency remains above the 50% Fibonacci retracement at $81,182. This level is measured against the earlier advance from $74,967 to $87,395 in mid-September.

Headwinds appear to be receding, according to daily-chart momentum indicators. While the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) line sits just below its signal line, the negative histogram is shrinking. Meanwhile, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is moving above the midline, with a reading of 54.

The swing high of $87,396 marks the nearest upside resistance. A sustained break above it could bring the round-number level of $90,000 into focus, followed by the 161.8% Fibonacci extension at $95,075.

On the downside, the first support lies at the 50% retracement of $81,182, backed by the 50-day EMA at $80,787. Further below, demand is expected at the 200-day EMA of $76,112.
