Philippine Peso: Is oil limiting the bearish bias? – OCBC

Pressure on the Philippine Peso (PHP) persists despite the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) raising rates by a larger-than-expected 50bp to 5.50%, according to OCBC strategists Christopher Wong and Sim Moh Siong. They attribute the continued weakness to lingering inflation concerns. While higher rates may slow depreciation, they are unlikely to fully counter elevated Oil prices, external imbalances and concerns over domestic growth. Maintaining its cautious stance, OCBC says a sustained PHP recovery requires lower Oil prices and an improvement in the external environment.
