Micron Technology's First Semiconductor Packaging And Testing Plant In India Has Started Commercial Production, With Chip Capacity Expected To Expand To Hundreds Of Millions Next Year!

The Sanand plant is Micron Technology's first semiconductor packaging and testing facility in India. The plant was jointly built with a joint investment of about $2.75 billion between Micron Technology and government partners, with a cleanroom space of 500,000 square feet in Phase I, meaning it has one of the world's largest single-layer packaging and test cleanrooms. Micron Technology has delivered the first batch of memory modules manufactured locally in India to Dell Technologies for its laptops produced for the Indian market.

The Sanand factory processes advanced DRAM and NAND wafers from Micron Technology's global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products. Micron Technology stated in a statement that the factory expects to package and test tens of millions of chips by 2026 and increase capacity to hundreds of millions by 2027.

For Micron Technology, expanding its traditional packaging and testing business in India complements the company's planned advanced manufacturing and packaging capabilities in the United States, further strengthening its global packaging and testing network. Globally, the Sanand plant helps diversify the supply chain.

Traditionally, memory packaging and testing businesses have focused on East Asia and Southeast Asia. By establishing a factory in India, Micron Technology has added a new production base for its backend packaging, which is expected to enhance supply chain resilience as AI becomes more widespread and memory chip demand grows.

Meanwhile, the factory reflects a broader transformation India is undergoing, shifting from a focus on semiconductor design and software to a focus on hardware production. Although the plant itself does not manufacture wafers, its key downstream processes such as packaging and testing are crucial for building a broader semiconductor ecosystem. Such businesses typically foster the development of supplier networks for chemicals, materials, precision equipment, and logistics, laying the industrial foundation for a more complete value chain.

Market Insight:

Against this wave of positive news, TD Cowen reiterated its buy rating for Micron Technology and maintained a $1,600 target price, citing favorable demand-side conditions and expecting the company to forecast earnings of about $37 per share in its November quarterly guidance. Investors are optimistic about the stock overall, with an average target price still having significant upside compared to the current price.
