EUR/JPY trades around 176.60 on Tuesday, down 0.21% on the day at the time of writing. The currency pair remains under pressure as the Japanese Yen (JPY) benefits from expectations of further monetary tightening by the Bank of Japan (BoJ), while the Euro (EUR) struggles amid political uncertainty in France and growing concerns about inflation across the Eurozone.

On the European side, the latest inflation figures from Germany reinforce concerns about persistent price pressures. Data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Tuesday confirmed that the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) rose by 3.3% YoY in September, in line with expectations and accelerating from 2.9% in August and 2.8% in July. On a monthly basis, consumer prices increased by 0.6%, compared with 0.2% previously.
Destatis President Ruth Brand highlighted that German inflation has exceeded the 3% threshold for the first time since December 2023, primarily driven by rising energy costs, particularly heating Oil and motor fuels.
These figures come as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East keep Oil prices elevated. Brent Crude Oil has retreated from its monthly highs above $105 per barrel but remains above $100, increasing costs for European businesses and households. Persistently high energy prices, combined with slowing economic activity, raise the risk of stagflation in the Eurozone.
This situation complicates the outlook for the European Central Bank (ECB), which faces the challenge of containing inflation without further weakening economic growth. The acceleration in German inflation could encourage policymakers to maintain a cautious monetary stance, potentially limiting further weakness in the Euro.
Meanwhile, political instability in France continues to undermine confidence in the single currency. Rising government debt and difficulties in securing parliamentary support for fiscal consolidation measures have pushed French borrowing costs toward levels not seen since the European sovereign debt crisis. Student protests demanding greater education funding add another layer of uncertainty to the country's already fragile political environment.
In Japan, the Japanese Yen receives support from expectations of additional interest rate increases by the BoJ, alongside speculation that Japanese authorities could intervene in foreign exchange markets to support the domestic currency.
Data released on Tuesday showed that Japan's Producer Price Index (PPI) increased by 6.8% YoY in September. Although the figure represents a slowdown from August, it indicates that inflationary pressures remain significant, supporting expectations of further monetary policy normalization.
Against this backdrop, EUR/JPY remains caught between persistent inflationary pressures in Europe and expectations of tighter monetary policy in Japan. While stronger German inflation could provide some support to the Euro through a more cautious ECB outlook, political risks in France and growing demand for the Japanese Yen continue to weigh on the currency cross.
