Google announced on Tuesday the release of Genie 4, a new-generation AI world model that can generate more realistic interactive virtual environments in real time from text prompts, and allows users to modify scenes dynamically as they explore. The latest advance has once again drawn market attention to the possibility that AI could change how video games are developed.
When Google first showed the related technology earlier this year, it caused the share prices of several gaming companies to fall sharply. Developed by Google’s DeepMind, Genie 4 lets users create freely explorable virtual worlds simply by entering a text prompt, and move around in them using keyboard controls. Unlike traditional AI video generation tools, Genie 4 not only generates visuals but can also adjust the virtual environment in real time based on user actions, making it far more interactive. Compared with its predecessor, Genie 3, Genie 4 offers improvements in both simulation duration and multimodal generation capabilities.

Google said the interactive virtual environments generated by Genie 4 can run for up to two minutes, roughly twice as long as Genie 3. Genie 4 is also the first model in the series that can generate images and sound simultaneously, supporting ambient sound effects, music, and character dialogue that responds to user actions. Google is currently making Genie 4 available as a research preview to a small number of trusted testers. In the coming weeks, the company plans to extend access to users subscribed to the highest-tier Google AI Ultra plan, as well as some developers building applications with Google AI Studio and the Gemini API.
In January this year, when Google first launched Project Genie, a prototype product powered by Genie 3, it triggered concerns on Wall Street about the outlook for the video game industry. Because investors feared that AI-generated virtual world technology could disrupt traditional game development workflows, the share prices of several game-related companies fell sharply at the time.
As Genie 4 further improves real-time interaction and multimodal generation, market attention on how AI technology may change the way game content is produced has also grown. Notably, Genie 4 also uses Gemini models to improve the coherence and interactive performance of virtual worlds. According to Google’s official blog, when Genie 4 generates a virtual scene, Gemini continuously observes the newly generated visuals, understands what the user is trying to accomplish, breaks that goal down into a series of specific steps, and then checks whether the relevant actions have been carried out.
In the field of artificial intelligence, Google is facing fierce competition from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic. However, with the recent launch of the Gemini 4 Argon model, the market believes Google is narrowing the technological gap with its competitors.
Market Insight:
The launch of Genie 4 marks new progress for Google in real-time interactive AI world models. Although it is still subject to technical limitations such as simulation duration, physical consistency, and generation quality, the capabilities it demonstrates have drawn market attention to the future direction of industries such as game development, film and television production, and robot training.
