European Inflation & Public Finances

French 10-Year Yield Exceeds 5% as Debt Concerns Intensify

France’s 10-year government bond yield climbed above 5% for the first time since 2002, while the spread over the German Bund widened to 160 basis points amid concerns about the government’s ability to secure parliamentary backing for fiscal savings.

Government debt reached EUR 3.596 trillion in the second quarter, equivalent to 119% of GDP and its highest level since the postwar period. The government lacks parliamentary support for a substantial savings programme, with social unrest adding to the pressure on public finances.

UK Inflation Reaches 11-Month High of 3.5%

UK headline consumer inflation rose to 3.5% year on year in September from 3.1% in August, driven by higher motor-fuel inflation. The reading exceeded the 3.4% consensus forecast and the Bank of England’s 3.0% projection.

Core inflation increased to 2.8% from 2.6%, matching expectations. Services inflation rose 0.3 percentage points to a four-month high of 3.7%, above both the 3.6% consensus and the central bank’s 3.3% projection. Brown Brothers Harriman reported that the swaps curve implied 113 basis points of tightening over the following 12 months.

The inflation release followed stronger labour-market figures showing 102,000 additional jobs against forecasts of 5,100. BoE Monetary Policy Committee member Megan Greene said on Tuesday that wage disinflation had stalled and that more moderation in pay growth was needed to meet the inflation target. She also expressed concern that the policy stance was not restrictive enough. UK government debt increased as well.

Sterling’s moves varied across the reporting window. GBP/USD rose about 0.70% on Tuesday, moving from around 1.3300 to just above 1.3400, its highest since mid-September, before ending just below that level. It eased to around 1.3375 in early Asian trading on Wednesday. Sterling was initially broadly flat after the inflation release, with GBP/JPY around 211.45, but subsequently strengthened against the dollar and euro; EUR/GBP fell to near 0.8390.

Energy & Geopolitics

WTI Recovers as Iran Says Indirect U.S. Talks Continue

WTI crude traded around $98.60 per barrel during Asian hours on Wednesday and later approached $99 as concerns about Gulf supply disruptions persisted. Increasing attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and threats to Saudi Arabian oilfields accompanied the recovery.

The rebound followed a sharp reversal on Tuesday, when WTI fell 2.36% to around $95.70 after earlier reaching a one-month high above $100. Israel’s Channel 12 News reported that a compromise proposal presented to Iranian officials by Pakistan’s army chief had received U.S. approval and preliminary Iranian agreement.

The reported proposal included transferring interest generated on approximately $6 billion in Iranian funds frozen in Qatari banks, rather than necessarily releasing the principal. Channel 12 also cited a Qatari report concerning a possible confidential International Atomic Energy Agency visit to Iranian nuclear facilities.

The status of the initiative remained disputed. Bloomberg reported that a diplomat involved in the negotiations rejected suggestions that an agreement was close, without denying that talks continued. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi subsequently said indirect negotiations with the United States were continuing through intermediaries including Pakistan and Qatar, Reuters reported. The earlier diplomatic headlines also coincided with gains in EUR/USD and declines in U.S. Treasury yields.

Central Banks & Economic Data

RBA’s Hauser Warns Inflation Outlook Has Deteriorated

RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said the inflation outlook looked “materially worse” than the central bank had forecast in August. He cited higher artificial-intelligence and technology prices feeding into consumer inflation, a boom in Australian data-centre construction and domestic capacity pressures.

Hauser also expressed concern that prolonged high inflation was affecting public confidence in a return to target. He said forecasts were still being finalised and that he was uncertain about the board’s decisions.

MUFG’s Lee Hardman reported that Australian rate markets had moved to price close to a 50:50 probability of another increase next month. He said higher domestic yields had supported the Australian dollar this year, although the currency had recently underperformed alongside weakness in AI-related trades.

BoJ’s Himino Says Underlying Inflation Is Almost at Target

Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino said on Wednesday that underlying inflation was almost at the central bank’s 2% target. He added that financial conditions remained accommodative.

Canadian Rate-Increase Pricing Strengthens as Dollar Gains

The Canadian dollar strengthened as markets increased their pricing of a Bank of Canada rate rise. USD/CAD traded around 1.4050 during European hours on Wednesday, extending its decline for a fifth consecutive day, after trading near 1.4052 on Tuesday at roughly one-month lows. The pair had reached 1.4300 on October 14.

Commerzbank said the probability of an increase at the next BoC decision rose from 36% to more than 75% on Monday morning. Governor Tiff Macklem had said persistently high energy prices would lead to significantly higher inflation projections in the bank’s forthcoming quarterly forecasts.

Canada’s September annual inflation rate was 3.1%, a four-month high driven by gasoline prices, but below the 3.2% market forecast. The BoC had previously indicated that it could raise rates if high energy prices persisted and inflation pressures spread beyond gasoline to other goods and services.

Bank economists differed over the need for tightening. Standard Chartered’s Dan Pan described roughly 100 basis points of market-priced increases as excessive, citing soft demand, subdued underlying inflation and a weak labour market. MUFG took the opposing view that a rate increase was warranted. Higher oil prices and Alberta’s rejection of separation from Canada also accompanied the currency’s advance.

Japan’s September Trade Deficit Reaches JPY 536.6 Billion

Japan’s September merchandise trade deficit reached JPY 536.6 billion as export and import growth slowed, the Ministry of Finance’s trade figures showed.

Finance Minister Katayama affirmed close coordination with the Bank of Japan, with a focus on expanding supply capacity without fuelling inflation. USD/JPY rose to around 158.30 during Asian trading on Wednesday after modest losses the previous day.

Hungary Holds Rate at 5.50% as Magyar Backs Euro Adoption

Hungary’s central bank kept its base rate at 5.50% and retained its 4.50%–6.50% overnight corridor. The MNB cited high energy prices, rising global yields and financial-market uncertainty, while reaffirming its commitment to meet the new 2.5% inflation target within its policy horizon.

September headline inflation was 1.6% year on year and core inflation was 1.9%. Commerzbank’s Tatha Ghose cautioned that seasonally adjusted monthly measures had reaccelerated and were running above target, contrasting with the low annual readings.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar expressed explicit support for adopting the euro. Commerzbank said his position had led it to make adoption by 2032 its base case; that date was the bank’s assessment, not a confirmed accession timetable.

Bank Indonesia Leaves Benchmark Rate Unchanged

Bank Indonesia kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged. The rupiah weakened, with USD/IDR rising for a third consecutive day to around 18,040 during European trading on Wednesday.

Fed Rate-Increase Probability Stands at 17%, BNY Says

Markets priced a 17% probability of a rate increase at the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting, according to BNY Markets’ John Velis.

The implied federal funds rate for December 2027 stood at 4.64%, representing just under 75 basis points of additional tightening. Velis said that pricing had eased from its most restrictive levels a few weeks earlier, when markets had priced a cumulative 100 basis points including September’s increase.
